Business Strategy & Preservation
Our projects focus on representation, ownership, and impact - the building blocks of generational wealth and the preservation of community history.
Strategy · Implementation · Stewardship
Tonbo Partners helps institutions, organizations, and families make sense of moments of change. When legacy deserves honoring, leadership needs clarity and the path forward needs to be forged.
The Tonbo practice
Tonbo means dragonfly in Japanese, which is a symbol of protection and prosperity. We carry that intention into all of our projects.
When the old model no longer fits, but the next one has not yet been built, we bring strategy, storytelling and execution together to move important work forward.

A distinct practice within Tonbo
What happens when a family has built something worth preserving — a business, a property, a history, a name — but the next generation needs a different kind of infrastructure to carry it forward? Legacy Forward helps Black families and family offices move generational value forward without losing the community meaning that made it valuable.
Pillar 01
Lay the ground work for the business to be passed on, and prepare the next generation to steward an asset — whether or not they become its day-to-day operator.
Pillar 02
Protect what makes the business yours: the brand, the processes, the knowledge built over generations, while building the infrastructure and capabilities needed to remain relevant in a changing economy.
Pillar 03
Document the people, places, purpose and decisions behind what was built so that knowledge lives beyond one generation's memory.
The origin
Legacy isn't something you inherit. It's something you decide to carry forward.
Legacy Forward is grounded in a family story rather than a consulting theory. Its origin reaches back to Lucy C. Jefferson, whose example of community preservation and economic independence in 1894 offers the prototype for the practice. Our principal, Adrienne C. McWilliams is a builder. Over 25 years, she has worked at the intersection of media, technology and community. Her work is grounded in a legacy of service that precedes her.
Adrienne is the eldest granddaughter of the Jefferson family, whose W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home, founded in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1894, is recognized as the state's oldest Black family-owned business. It was built by her great-great Aunt Lucy, who ran the business independently as a Black woman at a time when that required extraordinary courage and conviction. Lucy was also a philanthropist, and the Jefferson family has remained a presence of community serve and civic influence in Vicksburg for over 130 years.
The work is personal, but the opportunity is larger: Black family businesses and institutions have created enormous community value over generations, yet too often lack the infrastructure for a thoughtful transition. Legacy Forward exists to help families face that transition with both realism and reverence.

Tonbo Partners framework
A rigorous approach to generational transition — balancing the sanctity of what was built with the necessity of what comes next.
01 — WHERE WE START
Legacies aren't just inherited. They're built, protected and passed on. Every transition is held as a trust, so the values that built the past become the ground for the future.
Before anything changes, we take the time to understand what's already there. That means sitting with the family structure as it actually exists beyond an org chart. It means understanding how things have historically gotten done and why.
It means taking honest inventory of what the business owns: its assets, relationships, reputation. And it means having the conversations that are often the hardest to start when change is imminent and necessary.
BUILDING TRUST THROUGH CHANGE
02 — THE GROUNDWORK
Discover
Understand what you've built: the business, property, history, capital, reputation.
Preserve
Identify what must not be lost: the family story, the name, the community relationship.
Transform
Change what can't remain: the product, technology, leadership, revenue models, governance.
Transfer
Build continuity in the ownership structures, leadership pathways, and succession planning.
The Legacy Forward Assessment examines the business, the family, the asset, the market and the future.
